How often should you re-pack wheel bearings?

Hello,
We have a 2006 Fleetwood Niagara and I was wondering how often I should have the wheel bearings re-packed. Obviously it depends on how many miles you put on, but was wondering if there is any "standard" rules-of-thumb? Also, can you put bearing buddies on a 2006 Niagara? If so, is it worth it? (Not sure if they are just for older model trailers or certain wheel sizes or what?)
I have never re-packed bearings myself before, but I do rembember watching my Dad do it plenty times when I was a kid. Does anyone know of any posts or websites that have step-by-step instructions? Preferably with pictures"
Ok, so I never claimed to be a mechanic, but I have this feeling that if I brought it in to have it done, and asked these same questions, I might get a snicker or two. :W
Thanks

By the way, why does the spell-check always come up with a "Servr EERRor?

RE: backing up with sway bar on

This is the first time I've heard of this. Seems kind of silly. Of course if you turn one way or another too sharp (Forwards or backwards) it could cause damage. So could a lot of other things- like running into the roof of the camper (Leaving a big dent) :S with your canoe while carrying it! or better yet, anyone ever lock their keys in the vehicle while getting out to hook up your camper, just before leaving for home - When everyone is hot and crabby&! - Oh, and then having to walk 1/2 mile to the camp office when it is 97 degrees out to use the phone only to have On-Star tell you that they would be happy to open the doors...all I had to do was press the blue button to activate my subscription! HELLO! The doors are LOCKED LADY!:M...at least I got a hold of someone that could leave right away and they were only FORTYFIVE MINUTES! AWAY!!:E.....(did I mention the vehicle was running.) Now I know what your thinking, how could that dammage the camper? Right? Right. It wasnt until the nice gentalman broke into my car in less time than it took to accidently bump the door lock. (He only charged me $40 which I thought was pretty good being he had to drive so far.) Anyway after he left, I was in such a hurry to pick up the wife, our 1 year old son (Who by the way was suppose to have been in his car seat when all this happend) and dog who were waiting at the camp office. that I forgot to hook up the front of the sway bar, so when I took off down the road it fliped off and hit the ground causing it to rip away from the other end leaving it laying in the road. At this point I didn't really even care so I procedeed to make a U-turn in the middle of the road and coudn't quite make it, so I backed the camper into the ditch and ripped off one of the rear stablizers while exiting.
Not sure what the lesson is here folks, but I guess the point I'm trying to make is that we sure like talking about little details and decisions that will probalby never be an issue in a "normal "situation....(Like removing the sway bar when backing up)

Reflictix Question...Where do you put it?

Hello,
I just got done cutting out reflectix for inside of the window panels on our bunk-ends. Pop-up Gizmos are on order and we also have reflectix under our mattresses. My question is; would you also recommend we use reflectix in the windows in the "main-body" of our pop-up too, or do you think this is over-kill being these windows have the clear plastic and not just the canvas? We have a 2006 Niagara and are wondering particularly about "cool" weather camping. (we'll just say for the sake of discussion.....30 degrees +)
The reason I ask is; in order to do the rest, I would have to buy another roll, (Wich isn't a big deal) but if you don't think it would make a big difference I guess I would rather not have to store more than I need too.
Also, same questions in regards to "hot wheather"
Thanks for the feed-back!

Pop-up Gizmo- end wall question.

Hi,
We have placed reflectix under our mattresses and are planing on getting pop-up gizmos. My question is I've read posts where people zip something into their side walls in the bunk ends, but can't remeber what they use. Do you cut reflectix to fit in the ends? Does the pop up gizmo place make something for the bunk end walls too?
What do you use?
Thanks,

Loud water pump on our 2006 Niagara

The water pump on our 2006 Niagara is very loud, and shakes the whole camper. I seem to remember reading something in this forum about modifications you can make to help this out.
Does anyone have any suggestions. I know it somewhat "normal" for these pumps to be noisy, but it's been getting progressivly louder over time. (and it's only 2 years old)
Thanks for your input.

RE: Propane

Up here in Minnesota, I would say that about 1 in 5'ish? Gas stations will refill. I'm guessing that it's not as common in your neck of the woods though. When your driving by gas stations in your area, just look for a big tank (Usually behind or next too the station.)

RE: Roasted Twinkies---YUMMMMM

I fry Twinkies in a skillet "Grilled-cheese-syle" with a little butter. Careful though, it only takes a few seconds per side.
Give it a try!

Going Rates For Babysitter?

Our son is 2 years old and we have only had to hire a babysitter once so far. My question is; how much do you pay the sitter per hour, and is there a minimum if it is just a couple hours? We're not cheap or anything like that, but really don't know what's appropriate.
(We are in Minnesota if that makes a difference)
Thanks,

RE: Float charger and voltage meter recomendation...

To clarify a bit more, it is deep cycle battery for our "House" power on our camper.
The float charger would be for use in the winter time to maintain the battery when in storage. (Can't leave the battery in the camper over the winter.)
I've read somewhere that by simply leaving the camper plugged in does not charge the battery fully because it only charges at 12 volts, and to fully charge a 12 volt battery it needs to charge a bit higher. (That's just what I read and may be wrong) I'm not sure if our converter is a WOFC or not. I will have to check with the dealer or see (or if someone else reading this knows) if our 2006 Niagara Pop-up has a WFOC converter/charger. If it turns out we have a WFOC converter/Charger, would this mean that it is fully charging the battery properly?

Float charger and voltage meter recomendation...

I am planning on up-grading my battery to a group 29, and would like to get a float charger. Does anyone have any advise or recommendations on which one to get?
Also, I currently have no voltage meter(if that's what you call them) or any good way to check/test my battery level. Could someone steer me in the right direction as to a good/accurate gizmo that can meet this need. (I'm thinking it would be nice to have something mounted somewhere in the camper that is wired directly into the electrical system and/or battery.)
(I think I saw a post on this a while back, but I can't seem to find it.)
..oh, by the way, we have a 2006 Niagara in case that matters.
Thanks!

RE: What kind of 12 volt batteries should I buy?

Well after some great feed back from you all and a little additional research, I think I have decided to go with a single group 29 Interstate. I figure if I can get by with one battery, why not. One less battery to maintain and/or wreck. It should also fill our "Juice" requirements, as we shouldn't need too much more juice than our group 24.
.....unless someone has a good reason to change my mind???????
going once.....
Anyway,
Thanks for all the feed back, it's always nice having the support!

What kind of 12 volt batteries should I buy?

I am planning on buying (2) 12 volt batteries for our Niagara. (We need a little extra boost for extended stays without hook-ups.)
What brand/type/make/model/size/long amp hour batteries would you recommend (or stay away from)?
We want good quality/long life batteries that will give us a little extra juice when needed. I know some people like the 6 volt systems, but I'm not quiet sold on that, and don't believe it is worth trying to wrap my head around a different set-up. (I get confused enough with the 12 volt system)
Thanks!
